Discussion on
Training Needs Analysis

Activities/Obligations

The Training, Competency and Certification discussion covers general management aspects.

Training Needs Analysis (TNA) considers the training, competency and certification needs of a particular person.

Different people can pass through each job over time so the first step in TNA is to define the training, competency and certification requirements for each job.

By keeping records for a person of:

  • the training undertaken and scheduled,
  • competencies achieved and the period(s) these are valid for, and
  • certifications achieved and the period(s) these are valid for
these can at any time be compared with the requirements of the person's job and the difference between them determines what they still need to do or achieve - and this is the essence of Training Needs Analysis.

Using The Software

With OSHatWork the records that can be kept to facilitate Training Needs Analysis are:

  • the training, competency and certification requirements for each job;
  • scheduled training events, including the participants and, after completion, their results.
  • each competency achieved, and each certification held, by each person - together with the expiry date of each corresponding period of validity.

With these records in place you can perform a training needs analysis (TNA) for each person and generate a report on this that presents:

  • the training, competency and certification requirements based on the person's job;
  • the person's corresponding bookings, achievements and status including:
    • scheduled and completed training;
    • competencies and their validity periods (and expiry dates);
    • certifications and their validity periods (and expiry dates).
